Day 1 – Disciples Pray Together
Luke 11: 1-4 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples. 2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth. 3 Give us day by day our daily bread. 4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. (KJV)
No scripture passage is more recited, read or spoken liturgically by Christ followers than the Lord’s Prayer (usually the Matthew 6 version). “When you pray,” Jesus said, “Say, ‘Our Father…’ followed by nine plural pronouns:
…Give us this day our daily bread
Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who have trespassed against us
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Have you ever tried reciting the Lord’s Prayer using singular pronouns?
“My Father, who is in Heaven, hallowed be Your name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth, as it is in Heaven. Give me this day my daily bread, and forgive me my trespasses, as I forgive those who have trespassed against me. And lead me not into temptation, but deliver me from evil…”
A bit awkward, isn’t it?
Jesus was not only teaching His disciples to pray – He was teaching them to pray together. Praying together perfectly expresses the communal relationship that exists between God and His people. It allows us to not only talk with God as a faith community, but hear Him speak to us about those things that matter to Him and us.
What circumstances, relationships or situations currently touch your life as well as the lives of others? Are you ready to hear what the Father has to say about them?
Pray This Prayer Today: “Jesus, we want to learn how to pray together about the things that touch our lives and your heart. Teach us not only to speak to You, but to listen and hear Your voice. In Your Name we pray, Amen.”
